Other People’s Children (2022)

France, French

Insightfully written and directed, “Other People’s Children” has all the delicious scenes we’ve come to associate with European films of a certain vintage: long kisses on Metro steps, eye-catching skylines of Paris at night and an exceedingly attractive cast of players. Rachel is 40 years old, with no children. She loves her life: her high school students, her friends, her ex, her guitar lessons. When she falls in love with Ali, she becomes attached to Leila, his 4-year-old daughter. She tucks her into bed, cares for her, loves her like her own. But to love other people’s children is risky. This is a gentle, heartfelt relationship drama about – and for – intelligent adults.

Radical (2023)

Mexico, Spanish

Based on a true story, we visit a Mexican border town plagued by neglect, corruption, and violence. A frustrated teacher tries a radical new method to break through his students' apathy and unlock their curiosity, their potential... and maybe even their genius. This is a rarity and a crowd-pleaser about an unorthodox 6th-grade school teacher and his students that actually earns its stand-up-and-cheer status. Like teaching, if it reaches just one struggling student or one burned-out teacher, the film argues, it could well change the world.

Chevalier (2022)

US, English

Set in Paris in the days before the French Revolution, this movie is inspired by the true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne rises to improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette and her court. It is an enthralling piece of history that few people know about, and proves to be a bold take on an historical figure who does not get the credit he deserves. Come to be entertained by the story and the music and learn something about a composer erased by Napoleon.
